The Effectiveness of Music in Audiovisual Artworks

Posted by Michael Emperiom Category: Contemporary Art

In the realm of audiovisual art, particularly in video installations, sound – whether music, noise, or silence – plays a central role. While the visual elements often take center stage, it is the music that emotionally charges, enhances, or questions what is seen. But what makes the musical component of an audiovisual artwork truly effective? What characteristics ensure that it touches, captivates, or even irritates us as viewers?

I would like to reflect on the factors that make music particularly artistic and effective in video installations and other audiovisual works.

The Power of Atmosphere

One of the most obvious areas of impact for music in art is its ability to create atmosphere. Imagine a video installation depicting a dystopian landscape. A dark, deep soundscape filled with eerie noises can amplify the menacing quality of this world. At the same time, a gentle melody that contrasts with the images could achieve a completely different effect – it might emphasize loneliness or transience. The tempo also conveys a message to the viewer. It influences the perception of time and helps shape the imagery’s speed.

An effective musical score knows how to intensify the atmosphere of the work without overshadowing the visuals. It allows for interpretation while still establishing an emotional connection between the artwork and the audience.

Experimentation and the Courage to Innovate

Artistic music in audiovisual works thrives on experimentation and the courage to explore new paths. Unusual sounds or distorted noises can push the boundaries of the familiar and challenge us as viewers. However, despite the spirit of experimentation, the sound must not devolve into a seemingly random sequence of unrelated noises. The context of the image should always be preserved.

Silence can also be a powerful tool. A moment of complete silence in a video installation can draw attention to the visual level and create a strong emotional impact.

Spatial Effect and Immersion

Another aspect that influences the effectiveness of music in audiovisual artworks is its spatial dimension. Particularly in installations presented in a physical space, the sound can be designed to move throughout the area and envelop the viewer.

By using surround sound or interactive sound elements, music can help draw visitors into the artwork. For example, if sounds change based on the viewer’s position in the room, an additional dimension of perception is created.

The Smackman Coin

The Smackman Coin, a collaboration between artists Reinhard Schmid, C.O.U.D.E, Michael Emperiom, and the FLUX Collective, is a good example of the different effects music can have on variations of an artwork.
